Advising Families on Addiction And Recovery

William Messinger - BA, JD, LADC

Bill started Aureus (formerly Addiction Recovery Professionals) to improve recovery rates for functional alcoholics and addicts. Inspired by highly successful programs for physicians and pilots, Bill developed similar approaches for complex family systems. He writes articles on topics relating to addiction and recovery for families and their advisors. Bill is a member of AFHE, FOX, FFI and CFF. He is a graduate of Yale College, U. of Minnesota Law School and the Hazelden School of Addiction Studies.

My goal is for all families with an addicted loved one to:
  • Know that the only successful recovery models are the programs run by airlines for pilots and medical boards for doctors
  • Understand why these programs are successful, and
  • Insist on the same services for their family members
Please read the articles on my website for more information on applying the pilot/physician to the affluent. (I use "affluent" to cover a broad range of the population - people with jobs, professionals, executives, family businesses, the prominent, trust fund beneficiaries and the wealthy.)

For assistance and more information on our services, please go to our website, www.AureusInc.com or e-mail info@AureusInc.com (651-209-7670)

MORE INFORMATION ON THE SUCCESS RATES FOR PILOTS AND PHYSICIANS

  • The Only Verifiable, Successful Recovery Programs - The Pilot/Physician Programs
One of the daunting tasks for families and advisors seeking help for a family member with an addiction problem is sorting through all the treatment models, including claims about success rates for recovery and the benefits of specific recovery programs. Despite all the claims and promotions on TV and Websites, those searching for help should focus on the only verifiable, statistically valid, successful programs in the world - those run by airlines for pilots and medical boards for physicians:
  • They have long term recovery rates ranging from 85% to 92% These reported success rates are reliable because they are measured by the Federal Aviation Agency and State Health Boards who are charged with protecting the public safety by making sure pilots and physicians with addictions are fully recovered before returning to their professions.

Here is what Dr. Robert DuPont, former Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse said about a nation wide review of outcomes for physicians' programs:

The results: 78 percent of the physicians did not have a single positive test for any drug or alcohol use over five years of testing. Of the 22 percent who did have at least one positive test, 65 percent did not have a second positive test. Where else in the addiction treatment field can you find results like that? Those results set an entirely new standard for recovery outcomes, one that every treatment program should aspire to." (Emphasis added.)

Why does the doctor say it sets a "new standard for recovery outcomes"? Because all other programs have long-term recovery rates at thirty percent 30% and below.

Cancer Comparison
In our way of thinking, if similar statistics applied to cure rates for pilots and physicians with cancer or diabetes, families would be beating down the doors of hospitals and doctors' offices demanding the same programs for their relatives. But not the families of alcoholics! Addicts and alcoholics are sick people. They need educated, active family members to help them find effective treatment and encourage them to engage in post-treatment recovery activities, just like relatives who are sick with other chronic, life-threatening diseases.
